Dionisio " I saw him when seeing myself, I looked at him when looking at myself” Euripides: Bacchae. Dionysus, the "one born twice", extracted from the ashes of Semele, torn to bits by the Titans and reborn out of his only intact organ: the heart. A wanderer, a vagabond divinity who is torn between being a passer-by on an eternal journey and the necessity of settling down, of feeling at home everywhere, of being recognized, the chosen one and not merely tolerated. A creature living on a borderline, between identity and alterity, male and female, reason and madness, order and chaos. It is when the city, the polis, the immutable order of things inside the "border-walls", refuses to create a relationship with the foreigner, the other, the unalike, that the deepest chaos and the absolute tragedy are unleashed. Thus, lovers of a rigid identity, certain of their superiority, refuse to welcome the unknown and hence fall into the abyss. A grey zone emerges (as Jung teaches us) and they become "monsters", plunged into the horror of what they refused to see in themselves and projecting it all out. The realization of one's true self, the "process of individuation", is a hard path that leads Man to his inner-self and to his heart, thus to his rebirth. It is through a descent to hell, that one's true self resurrects from the ashes, through an inner alchemic process in which each passage alludes to wine and blood, to the grinding pressure, to the ashes, but also to the generating and germinating force of life whose custodian is Dionysus. |
